MAI-Thinking-1 enters public preview in Microsoft Foundry

Microsoft opened MAI-Thinking-1 in Foundry public preview. The sparse mixture-of-experts model has 35 billion active and roughly one trillion total parameters, a 256,000-token context window, function calling, developer instructions, and Chat Completions compatibility.

Why it matters: Public access turns an earlier partner-only model announcement into a testable enterprise reasoning endpoint with a smaller active inference footprint.

AWS publishes a deployable three-layer agent evaluation blueprint

AWS and Motorway released code for testing tool use, reasoning and output quality before deployment, then sampling production traces. The reference gates releases on repeated success and includes a no-AWS quickstart for mock agents.

Why it matters: Agent reliability needs deterministic tool checks, calibrated judges, repeated trials and production feedback connected to one release gate.

IBM shows why model routing is a systems problem

IBM researchers compared one CodeAct agent across 417 AppWorld tasks and found list prices predicted cost poorly. Caching, trajectory length, latency, compliance and workload shape changed which model was economically preferable.

Why it matters: A router that sees only prompt difficulty and token price can choose a nominally cheaper model that costs more per successful, compliant outcome.

GitHub Copilot adds US and EU data-resident model routing

GitHub added opt-in US and EU data residency across generally available Copilot features, with FedRAMP Moderate-authorized model infrastructure for US government customers. At launch, supported regional models carried a 10% multiplier premium and Gemini was not yet available on data-resident endpoints.

Why it matters: Model choice inside enterprise AI is increasingly constrained by where inference happens, which providers offer regional endpoints and how compliance changes price.

Claude Sonnet 4.6 makes million-token agent work a lower-cost default

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 4.6 with a one-million-token context window in beta and made it the default model for Free and Pro users as well as Cowork. It was priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens across the API and major clouds.

Why it matters: A strong workhorse model can create more product value than a premium flagship if it handles routine coding, computer use and document work with fewer escalations. Default placement also exposes new capabilities to a much larger real-world workload mix.
