What changed

IBM published an open, composable reference architecture for connecting quantum processors with CPUs, GPUs, storage, networking, and high-performance-computing schedulers. The design builds on hybrid research workflows including a 300-atom protein simulation and active-space calculations using as many as 33 orbitals.

Why it matters

The practical quantum stack is converging on scheduled hybrid systems in which quantum processors are specialized resources inside conventional supercomputing environments.

What to do

Use the architecture as a checklist for identity, scheduling, data movement, observability, and classical fallback when designing a hybrid research pilot.

Caveat

IBM describes the work as an evolving reference framework rather than a prescriptive blueprint, and useful workload boundaries remain an active research question.
