Anthropic says industrial-scale distillation attacks used 16 million Claude exchanges
Anthropic disclosed that it had identified what it described as model-distillation campaigns linked to DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and MiniMax, involving more than 16 million exchanges through roughly 24,000 fraudulent accounts. The company used the incident to argue for stronger account-linking, provider coordination and access controls around frontier capabilities.
Why it matters: At API scale, abuse detection is not just prompt moderation. Operators need to identify coordinated identity creation, structured query coverage, unusual output harvesting and cross-account behavior before a campaign completes.
