Google runs Gemma 4 on a data-center TPU in orbit
Google's Project Suncatcher prototype powered up its host and TPU trays, ran Gemma 4 prompts in orbit and returned responses to Earth. Google describes it as the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit; thermal-stress and radiation tests are next, followed by a planned two-satellite interconnect experiment in 2027.
Why it matters: The test moves orbital AI compute from ground qualification to a working inference path, but it proves only a small commissioning workload—not reliable, networked or economical space data centers.
