Anthropic's biology lab reported the first 3D structure of a vault-like particle from a bacteriophage, a 96-copy protein shell resolved by cryo-electron microscopy. Claude assisted sequence search, DNA construct design, isolation-method optimization and multi-agent microscopy processing under scientist direction.
Why it matters: The result links an AI-assisted workflow to a concrete experimental structure and a faster purification path, rather than only a simulated benchmark. It is also a clear case study in expert correction: Claude caused a two-week protocol setback and initially…
OpenAI published an internal study of coding-agent use in its research organization. By mid-August it counted 3.1 eight-hour agent-workdays for every human workday, more experiments per active experimenter, and growing success on tasks classified as four to eight hours, while more than half of successful tasks in that band still needed at least one human intervention.
Why it matters: This is unusually concrete evidence about frontier-lab use of coding agents and the human steering that remains. It also shows why token spend, agent runtime, code volume and experiment count are activity measures rather than proof of research quality,…
Anthropic researchers used Claude Mythos Preview to improve key recovery against the HAWK-256 challenge parameter and accelerate an attack on seven-round AES-128 by 200–800 times. Papers and HAWK demonstration code were released.
Why it matters: AI-assisted research can now produce technically checkable advances in a high-stakes field, making expert verification capacity a limiting resource.
