Claude’s API adds document-grounded citations as structured output
Anthropic added citations to the Messages API alongside plain-text and custom-content document inputs. Developers could attach source documents and receive citation blocks that point back to the relevant source material instead of asking the model to improvise citation formatting.
Why it matters: Native provenance reduces the brittle parsing and prompt work needed to make document answers auditable, although it does not prove that every cited claim is correct.
