What changed
NVIDIA and the University of Washington Institute for Protein Design released RFD4-Proteina weights and code for joint all-atom structure and sequence generation, with motif, target and ligand conditioning plus reward-guided search over candidate proteins and complexes.
Why it matters
The release makes a modern protein-design stack inspectable and runnable, while shifting the real decision from benchmark novelty to whether exact revisions generate synthesizable, functional molecules under independent computational and laboratory checks.
What to do
Pin model and code revisions, begin with a published example, apply structure, novelty, toxicity and developability filters, preserve every seed and score, and require blinded wet-lab validation before allocating therapeutic or diagnostic significance.
Caveat
Open weights do not establish biological function, safety or clinical utility. Benchmark and example results come from the release teams, inference can be expensive, and search objectives may exploit scoring-model weaknesses.
