What changed
Anthropic released the foundational document used to express and shape Claude's intended values and behavior. The full constitution is available under CC0, and discusses trade-offs involving helpfulness, honesty, safety, ethics and sensitive information.
Why it matters
A frontier model provider exposed a consequential part of its behavior-shaping layer as an inspectable artifact rather than leaving users to infer it from outputs.
What to do
Read the constitution when designing Claude-based policies, evaluations and escalation rules. Reuse its structure as inspiration for system-level values, then test your application against concrete behavior rather than assuming the document is enforced perfectly.
Caveat
Anthropic says Claude's outputs may not always follow the constitution's ideals. The document describes training intent, not a deterministic product contract.
