What changed

Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard spanning product discovery, checkout and post-purchase support. It was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, designed to work with A2A, AP2 and MCP, and initially targeted eligible U.S. product listings.

Why it matters

Agentic commerce needs more than product search: identity, offers, checkout, order state and merchant control must survive across assistants and storefronts. A shared protocol can reduce bespoke integrations and keep the merchant as the system of record.

What to do

Merchants should map their catalog, offers, fulfillment, returns, consent and payment flows to UCP concepts, but start with a sandbox. Product teams should log every agent-proposed cart change and require explicit confirmation before purchase.

Caveat

The announcement described an emerging standard and phased rollout, not universal interoperable commerce. Eligibility, geography, payment support and merchant implementation determine what actually works; protocol compatibility does not eliminate fraud or consent risk.
